A step by step guide to what, where and how, when advertising in the Jersey Evening Post
Tips and hints
Tip: Registration marks
You may have noticed a symbol at the top and bottom of the newspaper. It is a registration mark or guide which is used to line up all four colours on the press. When it is correctly lined up it should appear as it has above. When it is incorrectly lined up it could appear like this.
This is called out of registration or out of reg and, when this occurs, colour pictures will look fuzzy in the paper.
This unavoidable problem is caused by the paper being stretched on the press. This problem is however corrected by the press room technicians who make continuous adjustments to the press during printing.
For this reason it is advisable to follow the guidelines listed here in Step 4, which will help you avoid as much as possible the problems associated with registration.
Tip: Text and pictures
Avoid placing text over pictures, especially busy pictures, as it becomes harder to read.
Where possible, avoid placing text - especially white text - on colour pictures or backgrounds, as the registration is likely to cause problems. See on the guide on the middle right hand section of the facing page.
Tip: Design
Designing an advertisement comes easily to some and not so easily to others.
If you are one of the less artistic souls in this world, we have an easy solution for your problem. Our sales team have plenty of experience in this field so feel free to ask them for advice.
Tip: Colour
Adding colour is the most effective way of making your advertisement stand out from other promotions on the page.
Tip: Scanning
Read your scanner manual carefully and practice the process.
Remember to scan in CMYK mode, not RGB.
If you are unsure what you are doing, we can scan the image for you.
Tip: Text and fonts
Make sure the fonts you choose are easy to read.
Dont make your text too small to read.
Keep the text short and interesting to read.
