‘Very few responses’ to future hospital inquiry

Islanders are being asked to submit their views on the plans for the new £466 million project, which, if given the green light, will be built on the current site and adjacent land.

Under the proposals, the Gwyneth Huelin Wing and Peter Crill House would be pulled down and a new building would be constructed in their places, extending into Kensington

Place with walkways connecting to Patriotic Street car park.

The proposals could involve the compulsory purchase of the Revere and Stafford hotels.

Environment Minister Steve Luce decided to hold a public inquiry into the plans due to the scale of the project. The inquiry will be led by independent planning inspector Philip Staddon and is due to start in November.

The Environment Department has confirmed that ‘very few people have got in touch with the inspector’s office so far’ regarding the proposals.

Mr Staddon said that anyone who wanted to give their views on the plans could do so by writing to the inquiry. He added that any Islander could speak during the inquiry process.

He said: ‘The inquiry will sit over a number of days, exploring different elements of this major and complex development proposal, but I will make time, each day, for any member of the public who wishes to speak.

‘I would also reassure people that the inquiry will be conducted in an open and inclusive manner. There will be no courtroom style cross-examination and it’ll be accessible to anyone who wishes to take part.’

The deadline for written submissions and those registering to speak to the inquiry is 5 pm on Friday 8 September.

Anyone wishing to give their opinions should write to Helen Wilson, new hospital programme officer, c/o Department of the Environment, South Hill, St Helier, JE2 4US or email progofficer@aol.com.
