According to the company, the increase equates to – on average – an extra four pence per day on most households’ existing bills.

Jersey Water’s chief executive Helier Smith said that, after inflation, the price of water had fallen in real terms by approximately 16 per cent over the last 20 years.

‘We face continuous pressure on costs as we invest to comply with new legislation, manage water quality and enhance the resilience of the Island’s water-supply infrastructure,’ he said.

‘However, we have been able to limit our price increases over the past two decades, and again this year, by focusing on efficiency to manage the impact on customer bills.

‘This has been achieved while consistently delivering very high quality water and excellent customer service to the community that we serve.’

Mr Smith added that in 2018, his company’s water was the best quality it had ever been – achieving a 99.99 per cent compliance rate. Leakage was down 19 per cent.

He also said that the business had been awarded an 86.5 per cent satisfaction rate by the Institute of Customer Service.

Jersey Water supplies approximately 40,000 homes and businesses with over seven billion litres of water through a 580 km network of water mains each year. It is also one of the largest landowners in Jersey and employs 91 people.
