Advocate David Steenson, who has prosecuted and defended in some of the most notable cases in the Island in recent years, denied the offence during a brief hearing at Jersey’s lower court yesterday morning. The charge relates to an alleged assault on a 74-year-old man at a private address on 30 April. The 51-year-old lawyer, who did not speak during the hearing, and was represented by Advocate Debbie Corbel. He was released on bail. Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris, presiding, accepted that the case could be heard in the Magistrate’s Court, and ordered Advocate Steenson to reappear before the court for a pre-trial review on 13 June.
The Law Officers’ Department has confirmed that Advocate Steenson will not be prosecuting cases in the Royal Court while the case against him is ongoing.
Having qualified as an English barrister before moving to Jersey, Advocate Steenson was admitted as an advocate in the Island in 2004 and is one of the founding partners of the Steenson Nicholls law firm.
