The development, known as La Vielle Êcole, on the site of the former St Martin’s Primary School, will also house businesses including Jersey Village Vets and Mercury Distribution. An extra 40 parking spaces will be created in the devlopment, in addition to the existing 80 next to the village green. The development is expected to open in November.

St Martin Constable Karen Shenton-Stone said: ‘To have secured leases with blue-chip tenants like M&S Simply Food, Jersey Village Vets and Mercury Distribution is a testament to the quality space being provided in the completed redevelopment.’

There is a further unit that could be split into two that is yet to be leased. The Constable of St Martin said they are being earmarked for health care facilities but nothing has been confirmed yet.

‘The east of the Island will soon be well-served with some excellent community facilities,’ she added. ‘The project has taken some time to plan and progress, but delivery of the completed development will give the parishioners a community facility that they will rightly feel very proud of, and one that will not require them to make a regular contribution to upkeep. These two objectives have very much been at the forefront of the project team.’

In a tribute to the Island’s native tongue, signage around the development will be displayed in both English and Jérriais.

Pupils from St Martin’s School have also helped to design the main entrance gate.

The redevelopment is being funded with the assistance of a government of Jersey loan worth £2.3 million to be paid back over 20 years.
