Top broadcaster booked for fifth Festival of Words

An Evening with Sir Michael Parkinson, to be held at the Jersey Opera House on Friday 27 September, will celebrate the life and career of the veteran broadcaster and journalist who has interviewed more than 2,000 of the 20th and 21st centuries’ most important cultural figures.

The event, in which Sir Michael (84) will be interviewed by his son Mike, will show highlights from the Parkinson archive.

And it promises a rare opportunity for the audience to gain an intimate and illuminating insight into Sir Michael’s remarkable journey, from a pit village in Yorkshire to the peak of his broadcasting powers, while reliving the best moments from a show that was a regular feature of Saturday nights for millions of Britons.

Known primarily for his role as an interviewer on his television show Parkinson – which aired from 1971 to 1982 and from 1998 to 2007 – Sir Michael is a prolific journalist and writer, and has recently published a memoir of Manchester United footballing legend George Best, a paperback copy of which will be included in the event’s ticket price.

Now celebrating its fifth year since its inception, the Jersey Festival of Words will run across a variety of Island venues between 25 and 29 September.

As ever, the five-day literary festival will feature talks and events by visiting and local writers, as well as writing competitions, workshops and a comprehensive programme for schools.

Sir Michael’s event will be sponsored by offshore law firm Carey Olsen.

‘Having supported Jersey’s first Festival of Words in 2015, we have seen first-hand how the event has grown since that first year,’ said
Carey Olsen’s chairman, John Kelleher.

‘The fact it is able to attract the likes of Sir Michael Parkinson demonstrates how the festival has established itself as not only a flagship event for Jersey, but also the wider literary scene.’

Organisers will reveal further details about this year’s festival in the weeks to come. For more information visit jerseyfestivalofwords.org.
