Campervan users urged to attend Le Port demonstration

The ‘show your hands’ support demonstration is due to take place at Le Port at 11am tomorrow (SUNDAY).

Earlier this year, Infrastructure Minister Kevin Lewis, at the request of St Peter Constable Richard Vibert, authorised a rule meaning that vehicles were limited to staying there for a maximum of 12 hours in any 24-hour period.

Senator Steve Pallet lodged a proposition to rescind the change of rule, saying that it was too restrictive.

In the proposition, Senator Pallet said: ‘This decision is literally a sledgehammer to crack a nut, and shies away from the real issues that need to be addressed for modern-day use of motorhomes in the Island.’

Among the confirmed attendees for tomorrow’s demonstration are members of the newly formed camping reform committee as well as Deputy Lewis and Mr Vibert.

Paul Hymas, the member of the camping committee who is organising the demonstration, said he believed other sites should be made available to campervans to ‘take the pressure off Le Port.’

In addition to tomorrow’s demonstration, Mr Hymas said that the camping committee had drawn up a seven-page document which includes suggestions for a permit-styled system to monitor camping across the Island.

He said: ‘There are a lot of areas which don’t get used for Jersey, such as a car park near La Pulente. Additionally, we have proposed an idea of
a permit system which would be just for local people.’

Mr Hymas added that Mr Vibert appeared to be in favour of the idea to open up other camping areas across the Island.

The proposition is due to be debated in the States on Tuesday 21 May.
