‘We’re not counting chickens yet’

The parish club swatted aside nearest rivals Jersey Wanderers for the second time in two weeks with another pinpoint display in the Condor Ferries CI Women’s League, leaving their fellow challengers from Jersey and Guernsey requiring end-of-season miracles.

St Lawrence’s seventh win from seven took them six points clear of Wanderers as crunch-time looms, while Sarnian hopefuls Guernsey Ladies and North [defending champions, previously named Ormer FC] both trail by 18 with 21 to play for.

In all likelihood one more victory, against either of the Guernsey duo, will be enough.

‘We haven’t really looked into the permutations because North have only played three games, but we’ve still got to play North twice and they’ve also got Rozel, who could give them a good game,’ said St Lawrence coach Nelson De Castro. ‘We’ve just got to keep winning to take it out of their hands.’

Sunday’s six-goal success, which also featured goals from Kelly Hughes and Jenny Cullen, followed an 8-2 win against the same opponents seven days earlier. Both scorelines undermine Wanderers’ five-game early-season, 100% form.

‘Last week was unfortunate,’ said De Castro.

‘Wanderers only had nine players and the result was a bit unbalanced because of that. This week they had a full complement of 13 or 14 but at the moment I think we’re just stronger than they are. They will always give us a good game but they just aren’t as strong as they have been recently.

‘Wanderers came out stronger in the second half and we made a few changes to try out new things. Jenny Cullen normally plays at full-back but she came on on the right wing and managed to score. It was a good chance to experiment and try players in different positions.’

He added: ‘We’ve been so close before … it went to the last game of the season last year so we won’t be counting any chickens yet.’
