The company is currently trialling a new ‘smart’ Chargemaster charging station which allows users to pay for their power via a smartcard or app.
Currently drivers of electric vehicles must have an account with Jersey Electricity to use their charge points.
The company has said that once the trial is over, it will replace the existing JE charging points around the Island and then, with the help of the States, the company hopes to expand its network outside of town to a total of 50 terminals.
Ian Wilson, Jersey Electricity’s energy solutions manager, said that the company had previously been reluctant to invest in new charging terminals, but an upturn in the Island’s electric vehicle usage had changed the business’s position.
‘Those wishing to use the app will have to register for an account and will subsequently be billed for their usage. Those wishing to remain in our Evolve EV drivers club will be able to continue with their monthly subscription,’ he said.
‘Our aim is to extend Jersey’s public network to around 50 charging points, but we cannot do this without support and engagement from the States of Jersey, with whom we continue to work closely.
‘Transport currently accounts for a third of the Island’s total emissions and we see it as the next big step in reducing carbon.’
