Badminton:Jersey girl beats European champion

The competition lasted four days, the first two for singles and doubles, the second two for team events with Agathangelou being selected for all sections, including a phenomenal first game when she beat the European champion, Maria Thorberg.Despite beginning slowly, and allowing her opponent to win the first set 11-6, she tidied up her game and won the second 11-6 before, with everything to play for in the deciding set, she edged home 11-7.It was a terrific achievement for the young Jersey girl and that win alone justified her place in the team.In the doubles she was paired with Naomi Tarry and in the first round they played a Finish pair, winning easily, before a second-round game against the Danish No 1 under-16 seeds, Line Kruse and Maria Thorberg. The England pair won convincingly, 15-10, 15-12.

In the quarter-finals they played against the German No 1 pair and lost 15-12, 15-6.In the team events Agathangelou was paired with Liz Brett, both seeded No 2.The first draw was against Finland and, in her one game, played convincingly, they won 15-3, 15-10.The overall score against Finland was 9-0.The second draw was against tournament favourites Copenhagen, where England lost all three singles games. In the doubles England were more successful, as No 1 England seeds Jenny Wallwork and Ruth Coleman notched up a first win for England.

Then it was the turn of Agathangelou and Brett who had a hard battle, but won their match 15-6, 15-10.Theirs was to be the last win for England against Copenhagen who won the overall tie 7-2.There was still one other strong county team to play against, Tyrlland, in Denmark, and this time England won again, 7-2 overall, with Agathangelou winning both her singles and doubles matches. So, although they did not finish in the top three places (Germany were first and Copenhagen second) England did well enough to finish fourth from nine teams with Agathangelou justifying her place in the side, and winning more games than many of the other England players.
