Abuse: The world is watching, says Esther

CELEBRITY children’s rights campaigner Esther Rantzen said on Saturday that the eyes of the world would remain on Jersey until justice was done for abuse victims.

At a meeting organised by the Jersey Care Leavers Association, she spoke to reassure the victims of alleged abuse that they were not powerless.

The veteran TV presenter advised the association to organise an internet petition calling on the States to appoint independent judges and lawyers to hear their cases.

And she urged Islanders to follow the example of many Belgians who marched on the streets with white flowers in a show of solidarity and strength following a child abuse scandal there. ‘Everyone in this room has got five friends, and they too have five friends,’ she said. ‘It would not take long to get thousands and thousands of names.’
