New association for retailers is to be launched next week

The Jersey Retail Association (JRA) has been set up to represent the retail sector, promote its interests and provide practical support to individual members and businesses.

Last year the organisation was granted £100,000 by the Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture Department to pay for the appointment of a new chief executive, as well as start-up costs and ongoing marketing and promotion.

The initiative has been spearheaded by David Elliott, business development director at Voisins, and John Marquis, store director at de Gruchy’s. The association builds on the work of the informal Retail Development Group, who have been meeting on a monthly basis for some years to discuss ongoing concerns.

Association chairman Mr Elliott said: ‘Any retailer with an interest in driving the industry and the association forward is welcome to come to the launch, hear about the benefits of membership and get involved.

‘Until now, retailers have not had an industry body focusing specifically on giving them practical support. We are looking forward to bringing together all our retailing talent to share best practice and address common interest.

‘The support from Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham will enable us to build and develop the industry, ensuring that we continue to provide a vibrant offering to Islanders and play our part in supporting tourism,’ he added.

Mr Marquis said: ‘The retail and wholesale sector in Jersey consists of over a thousand businesses and employs over 7,600 people. The JRA is already working closely with partners including the Jersey Chamber of Commerce, Visit Jersey and the Jersey Consumer Council to address the issues affecting the industry and ensure this vital sector continues to develop and grow.’

The launch party takes place this coming Tuesday, 6 February, at the Town Hall, from 6 pm to 8 pm. For more information contact David Elliott at David.Elliott@voisins.com.
