With the 2018 Swimarathon about to get under way next week, primary school children are having their artwork celebrated on the swimming tournament’s daily programmes.
Each year the Lions Club of Jersey organises a competition, open to all primary school pupils, to design a front cover for each of the five Swimarathon daily bulletins.
The theme of this year’s Swimarathon Primary School Design Competition was ‘caring for the carers’ and the budding artists were asked to illustrate that theme and draw their own ‘superheroes’.
Entries were received from a dozen schools but this year has seen a clean sweep for the pupils of Helvetia House School and all five front covers will feature their works.
The judges had an extremely hard time picking just five designs, with Mike Berry, first vice-president of the Lions Club of Jersey; Leo the Lion, the Swimarathon mascot; and Tim Houghton, of the event’s sponsors, RBC Wealth Management, spending a great deal of time looking at all the designs.
Mr Berry said: ‘We were all impressed by the amount of creativity poured into the designs and it was very hard to pick just five because in our eyes there were many worthy winners.
‘However, we finally picked our five, all of which will really add a splash of colour to each of the bulletins. Huge thanks to everyone who took the time to send in entries and our warm congratulations to the winners.’
The winners will receive their prizes from the Lieutenant-Governor, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, at the opening of the Swimarathon next Wednesday, 14 March, and they are Olivia Maddox (9), Petra Viera (11), Ava Dodds (11), Mia Field (10) and Siena Kilbey (10). Each will be awarded with an individual prize, while Helvetia House School will receive £500.
