A teenage boy who died after getting into difficulty in a river has been named by police.

The body of 17-year-old Callum Dawson was recovered from the River Aire in Leeds in the early hours of Wednesday morning, West Yorkshire Police said.

The incident happened on a stretch of the river behind the Cardigan Fields leisure complex on Kirkstall Road in the city.

West Yorkshire Police said that Callum’s death “is not being treated as suspicious and the Coroner’s Office has been informed”.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, the force said that they had been made aware of reports of a male entering the water shortly before 6.45pm on Tuesday.

They attended the scene alongside West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, recovering the body of Callum, who was from Bradford but living in Leeds, at around 1.30am on Wednesday.
