Church hall shut indefinitely after roof collapse injures children

A church hall has been closed indefinitely after part of its roof collapsed and injured some children.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Tranent Church Hall in East Lothian just before 7pm on Tuesday.

Numerous children suffered superficial injuries however no-one was seriously injured.

A Church of Scotland spokesman said: “We have met with the Health and Safety Executive this morning and the building will be closed until further notice.

“We are very thankful that the injuries sustained were not more serious and we hope the children are now recovering.

“Our prayers are with everyone who was hurt or affected by this incident.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was not a structural collapse but plaster fell from the ceiling.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in East Lothian were called to an address in Church Street, Tranent at around 6.55pm following reports that a portion of the building’s roof had collapsed.

“Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service attended.

“There are no serious injuries.”
