Scottish Government looks to strengthen ties with India

Deputy First Minister John Swinney is to promote Scottish trade and investment on a trip to India.

Mr Swinney will hold meetings in Delhi and Bangalore with business and government figures during the visit from November 23 to 29.

The trip is also aimed at strengthening education and cultural links between the two countries.

India is Scotland’s fourth-largest international market for further and higher education students, according to the Scottish Government.

Education Secretary Mr Swinney will be joined on the visit by senior leaders from the higher education sector.

He said: “There is much we can learn from India, a country highly regarded for its spirit of creativity, entrepreneurship and young ambitious workforce.

“Equally, Scotland can offer a lot of expertise in areas that the Indian Government have identified as important, such as clean water and data driven innovation, and I look forward to discussing these priority subjects further.

“Working with the delegation from our world renowned universities we will highlight the strengths and achievements of Scotland’s higher education sector and promote the exciting opportunities for Indian students to visit, work and study here.”

The trip will include a reception at the British High Commission in Delhi to mark St Andrew’s Day on November 30, and a separate celebration with alumni from Scottish universities in Bangalore.
