The devastated family of a youth football coach found murdered at a flat have paid tribute to the “beautiful young woman who had everything to live for”.

Megan Newton was discovered at an address in Fletcher Road in Stoke-on-Trent at about 3.20pm, on Saturday, according to Staffordshire Police.

The 18-year-old, who lived on the street, was named by the force as a man appeared in court charged with her murder.

The victim’s family, in an emotional tribute released through police, said: “We just can’t believe what’s happened.

“Our hearts are broken and our family is devastated.”

Released alongside a photograph of the young woman, the statement continued: “Meg was a beautiful young woman who had everything to live for.

“She was into sport in a big way.

“She loved playing football and used to give up her weekends to work as an assistant coach for the under-sevens.

“She loved working with children and was studying sports at college as well as holding three jobs down at the same time.

“Meg had plans for the future – she was so independent and knew what she wanted to do with her life.

“We were all behind her every step of the way and would have done anything for her.

“She was a young woman in the prime of life, so precious and loving and such a big part of our lives.

“We just adored her.

“Family meant everything to Meg and we’re all struggling with what’s happened.

“It just doesn’t feel real.”

Her family are continuing to receive support from specially-trained officers.

Joseph Trevor, 18, of Danebower Road, Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent, was charged with Megan’s murder on Monday and appeared at magistrates’ court on Tuesday.

He was remanded into custody at North Staffordshire Justice Centre and is next due to appear at Stafford Crown Court.

Meanwhile, a police appeal is continuing and anyone with information should call police on 101 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
