Clipper takes the Cape Town leg lead

After a bad start and a long time spent bringing up the rear in seventh place, Jersey have had a change of fortune.They set sail with the rest of the fleet of identical 60-foot yachts on Friday 6 June.

They are currently on the penultimate leg of their 11-month circumnavigation, this being the first race of leg five.They have now been on the sea for 15 days and are near to completing the 2,300 mile race from Mauritius to Cape Town.Jersey are expected to arrive in the city tomorrow morning along with Bristol and Glasgow clippers.

The other boats are currently expected in on Sunday.On the day Jersey realised they were catching up with former leaders Bristol, skipper Simon Rowell and the crew could not believe it.Mr Rowell said: ‘We saw another yacht and we all convinced ourselves it wasn’t Bristol, so I called them up for a chat, wondering which other madmen were out here sailing.’””Yacht in position XYZ, this is sailing yacht Jersey Clipper approximately three miles north of you,”” …

“”Jersey this is Bristol,”” they replied in a rather surprised tone!’Jersey Clipper remain in first place overall with 63 points, closely followed by Bristol who have 60.
