Jersey make a flying start to medal assault

As in the previous Island Games held in Guernsey in 1987, Jersey are second in the table after day one, behind the Isle of Man but ahead of hosts Guernsey.

But it was only late in the day that Jersey shot up the table when the triathlon results were finally given out – a downpour leaving the team results unannounced after the finish.Golden girl Melissa Messervy retained her ladies’ triathlon title and doubled that with ladies’ team gold, and the 2001 champion, Paul Clements, returning after a long lay-off, had to settle for team gold and individual bronze.

Jersey’s cyclists had given the team a solid start with an excellent team time-trial silver early yesterday morning, while field medals from 17-year-olds Lauren Thérin (javelin silver) and Simon Phelan (high jump bronze) kept the Island’s scoreboard ticking along.Jersey’s young team are also making good progress in football, tennis, table tennis, badminton and fullbore rifle.
