11 men caught for drink-driving in police crackdown

Officers have stopped a total of 4,672 motorists at 37 roadchecks set up at locations across the Island and at all times of the day and night.

Of those stopped, 181 have been breathalysed.Insp Nigel Truscott said that all those arrested were men, adding that their average age was 36.

Seven of the 11 were stopped at roadchecks and the other four were pulled over because of their driving.The worst offender, a 21-year-old, was pulled over on the St Aubin’s inner road and found to be almost three times over the legal limit.In addition to those found to be drink-driving, officers also arrested a motorcyclist for taking a bike without consent and reported several motorists for vehicle, tax and insurance problems.Insp Truscott said that 12 drivers had been arrested during the first eight days of last year’s July campaign.

He explained that July was now the worst month for drink-driving offences, with December recording the fewest convictions.The police crackdown is scheduled to continue until 13 July.
