In her father’s wheel-tracks

In her father’s wheel-tracks

Now his daughter Nina is retracing his route .

. .

starting with a night beneath the stars on Mount Bingham.

Nina and her friend Simon Rawles left Plymouth yesterday to catch the Condor ferry to Jersey, where Mr Jenkin, then a 21-year-old student, and his Oxford undergraduate friend Gordon Newbery crashed out in the undergrowth on 6 July 1953.The next day they boarded the boat to St Malo and embarked on a journey that took them through France, Switzerland and Germany.Mr Jenkin recorded the trip in a detailed diary with maps and photographs. As she boarded the boat to France this morning, Nina (28) said: ‘We arrived in Jersey on the same date as my dad and we slept on Mount Bingham too – we had a lovely night under the stars and woke up to blazing sunshine.’My father died of cancer when I was eight, so this trip will be more than a mere cycling holiday – it will be a journey to learn more about him.

My memories of him are very limited, but his diary is so interesting.’ While she is away, Nina plans to keep a diary just as her father did.

You can check her progress on her website, which includes her father’s diary.
