Man blinded in one eye tells of fight in St Aubin

Richard Harrison (32) denies committing a grave and criminal assault on Daniel Devenny, now 46 years old, outside Stampers in St Aubin on 4 April 1999.Devenny told the Assize jury that as the group walked towards the NatWest Bank, they came into contact with Harrison and three friends.Words were exchanged between the group and a fight broke out.’I was backing away from the group and then fell.

I thought that there was about two or three people around me and I was being kicked in the right hand side of my face,’ said Devenny. The kicks fractured his nose, cheekbone and blinded him in his right eye. After being rushed to hospital by ambulance, Devenny said that he could see his right eye bulging out past his nose and that blood was filling the floor of the cubicle at Accident and Emergency.Under cross examination by defence advocate Nuno Santos-Costa, Devenny agreed that he was abusive in the hospital.

‘I was distressed and in shock at my injuries and the nurses told me there was an emergency to deal with.

I thought that I was in a mess and needed attention.’Devenny was then discharged from hospital after the nurses refused to treat him.

He was sent home and told to come back the next day.The trial continues.
