Change of Cups for Jersey RFC

The cost of having to travel to the UK or to pay for mainland sides to visit Jersey is far too prohibitive, although Jersey will be playing in a national clubs’ competition, sponsored by Powergen, instead. At the club’s annual general meeting last night members were told that Jersey would be the Hampshire representative in the Powergen competition because Basingstoke, the team they lost to in the final of the Hampshire Cup, were ineligible. The draw for the first game, which is open to the best junior clubs at county level, will be on 17 July with the first game to be played on 30 August. Also at last night’s agm, attended by over 50 club members, Mick Curzons was presented with the Barry Colston award for his work with the youth teams over the years, most recently with last year’s under-17s team, which did so well against mainland opposition.Cliff Chipperfield, formerly chairman of the Jersey Rugby Club, was made an honorary vice-president for his work for the club, including his initiative in setting up the Jersey Touch Association which now runs the summer series, and the only change in the committee sees Eric Axford replace Paul Davies as treasurer.Chris Scott remains club chairman, Dai Burton is club coach, Mike Engleman is president, Rad Montgomery is club captain, Mary Medcalfe is membership secretary, Cliff Chipperfield remains chairman of the Jersey Touch Association, Adam Budworth is business manager, Kate Adams is fixtures secretary, David Henry is members representative and Chris Lynch is club secretary.First XV and 2nd XV captains will be decided at a players’ meeting towards the beginning of the new season.
