P & R buy time for deal on welfare bills

Policy and Resources have agreed to attempt to find the money for the second half of 2004.It is an attempt to stave off St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft’s proposition that would force the States to pay all the Island’s welfare and residential care costs from next year.

The committee want more time to put a complete deal in place which will involve the States taking responsibility for welfare but handing main roads and other services to the parishes.P & R’s commitment came at a meeting yesterday attended by nine town Deputies, Mr Crowcroft and St Clement Constable Derek Gray.
