Airport hotel gets the go-ahead

Planning yesterday gave their backing to a proposed 61-bedroom budget hotel next to the Mermaid Tavern in St Peter.

The full Environment and Public Services Committee sat to give in-principle approval for the development, but they want the hotel moved so that it fits in with the Island Plan.

‘We’re absolutely delighted,’ said Michelle Cousins, who, with her husband Nick , owns the land, the pub and the nearby Lakeside residential home.

‘We have been planning the hotel for about a year now and we are very keen to take the project forward as quickly as we can.’Planning’s approval was also well received by Deputy Lyndon Farnham, who has responsibility for tourism with the Economic Development Committee.

‘This is a clear signal that Jersey is open for business and is further evidence of a new confidence in the tourism industry.

I hope that this will be a catalyst for more investment to come, but I would stress that we need to be cautious in our optimism – we still have some very big challenges ahead of us.’
