Tough day ahead

In 2002, their inaugural season, the Channel Islanders went all the way to the final and won the Gold Cup Plate for non-British League clubs. But for this weekend’s clash the club has to make do without a number of the Island Games stars.

Kimberley Goodall, Lee Merrien, Nathan Stevens, Alan Rowe, Claire Lidster and Erica Bodman are all absent, as is young Kylie Robilliard, who was in line to run both the 100m and 200m until shea learned of her England selection. The good news is that Dale Garland is fit to take his place in the team, although his ongoing back problem means he is likely to compete in only the 400m, 400m hurdles and relays.Among the potential opposition at Eton are ten British League clubs, including the mighty Belgrave Harriers.

Two semi-finals of eight will be drawn from the 16 competing clubs and only the winner go through to the final. However, team manager Andew Winnie remains hopeful that the squad can sneak a place in the final as one of the most impressive non-British League clubs.’It is a case of having to get very good performances from a number of our athletes,’ he said.

‘If we can do that we can still get to the final.’
