Birth rate sends the numbers climbing

The population has grown by 300 since the census two years ago, and statisticians say the increase is the result of the high birth rate, rather than because of migration into the Island. They also say that if the current trend continues, Jersey’s population will never hit the 90,000 mark, but will instead peak at 89,000 in 20 years. The numbers produced by the Statistics Unit of the Policy and Resources Department include Island residents, Jersey students who are studying in the UK and people who are either on holiday or travelling.

The figures were produced in March this year, and do not include an estimated 4,000 seasonal workers who stay in Jersey for less than a year.
