Three organisations rewarded for good business practice

Pinewood Residential Home, Chateau La Chaire hotel and the Jersey Hospitality Association have achieved the Excellence Through People award, which recognises those tourism and hospitality employers who have adopted recognised standards of employment practice.

o qualify, businesses must prove they conform to a ten-point code.

Jersey Hospitality Association recruitment manager Jeremy House explained: ‘There are five main areas.

Firstly they have to show they can find the right people and are recruiting good staff.

They must offer a decent work environment and look after staff in terms of health and safety.

Then they must develop their skills with internal training so that they can improve and maintain standards.

‘Employers should also show that they are communicating effectively and hold regular appraisals and meetings, that they are keeping staff motivated and recognising their achievements with rewards such as bonuses, lunches or day trips, bonus schemes and so on.

For people in the hotel and restaurant trade this is a good way to attract staff back for a second or third season.

Mr House said that 15 Jersey businesses in total had now achieved Excellence Through People – mainly hotels – and a further five organisations were in line.

‘Our next targets are the residential homes and retailers,’ he said.

he project has the support of the States Training and Employment Partnership.
