Anger over training on environmental site

Between 15 and 20 young cadets staged the exercise at Les Blanches Banques, alarming local residents who said the sounds of smoke grenades and bangers being let off ‘sounded like a war going on’.Countryside manager John Pinel said they did not give permission for military exercises to take place there, adding they could cause a great deal of damage to an area recognised as one of the top ten sand dune systems in the British Isles.Resident Andrea Simoncelli (32) said he had heard a commotion outside while watching television just after 9 pm and had gone to investigate.

When he went outside, he said he had seen smoke rising from the trees at Les Blanches Banques behind his house.’They should not have been down there because there are signs saying please stick to the footpaths, it is a protected area and they trampled absolutely everywhere.

We went down in the morning to have a look and there were bangers all over the place, I ended up picking seven of them up,’ said Mr Simoncelli.
