Jersey Football Tournament: Every game a final

MORE silverware is on offer at next week’s Jersey Football Tournament. As well as the overall trophy and the JEP Player of the Tournament, there will be trophies for the winners of all six matches. It will be an added incentive to the four teams – Manchester United, Benfica, Boca Juniors and Celtic.’There has to be a winner in each match so it makes it more interesting,’ said tournament organiser Iain Mackenzie.

‘Not that they need any more incentive to win, but it’s nice for the teams who don’t win the tournament to come away with something.’It gets more people involved and it’s nice that the clubs have more to play for and there will be a presentation to the winning side at the end of the game.’For the sponsors it means, for example, that their trophy could be on display in the trophy cabinet at Old Trafford.’We don’t have a trophy for the match on Thursday night between Benfica and Boca Juniors so if anyone wants to put up a trophy we’ll be delighted.’The fourth annual tournament has seen the number of teams drop from six to four but each team now plays a minimum of three games as opposed to two.’For me, looking at the games on offer there should be one that’s highly entertaining – Benfica v Boca Juniors.

Getting a standard like Boca Juniors is really something,’ said Mackenzie.’Sometimes you wonder if the public in Jersey realise what they’ve got on their doorstep.

We’re hoping that this tournament is well attended because we rely on that to keep it going.

From a spectator’s point of view there’s some fantastic games.’Apart from the usual Sky Sports and MUTV, Jersey Insight are doing all the games and they’re putting them out on broadband.

We’re in talks with Celtic TV about streaming it back and playing them live.’
