Board may be set up to run Airport after reform

Originally it had been intended that the Airport would become a States-owned self-funding business run along the same lines as Jersey Telecom. But those plans have been scrapped following issues over future funding, the unwillingness of unions to accept the proposals and pressure from airlines and the tourism industry for lower charges Therefore, as part of the government reform process, a place in the political map has to be found for the Airport – and a report released on Friday points to the preference for a board reporting to the Economic Development Minister. The report, entitled The Way Forward 2003 to 2005, also states that last year’s States decision that the Airport is a strategic asset for the Island ‘will be the single most important driver during the period’.
