Police: We’re getting better

Mr Power said that Home Office Inspectors placed forces in one of three unofficial groups – failing, improving or beacon – which was not made public in the report.

In 2000, after the last inspection, the force was heavily criticised, with 12 major recommendations made to bring it up to scratch.Today, however, Mr Power said that the Jersey force was in the ‘improving’ category with a report many UK forces would have been delighted with. The States police was praised for having strong and accessible leadership, for having come on leaps and bounds in respect of combating levels of sickness and absence, and for its work in partnership with other agencies, especially the honorary police.Mr Power said that his officers across the force were as good as could be found anywhere and he praised the work of his front-line men and women.

He insisted that the force was well positioned to continue making significant progress in the future.

‘We are delighted that independent scrutiny by Her Majesty’s Inspector has reached such positive conclusions about the force,’ he added.
