AG’s role in States could be changed

Instead, the postholder could be required to stand for election as a States Member, making him or her accountable to Islanders. The requirement is one of several options being considered by a group of politicians unhappy at the right of the current Attorney General, William Bailhache, to comment on political matters being dealt with in the Chamber.Their discontent was heightened by last week’s debate on proposals for how scrutiny will work under the new ministerial government.Mr Bailhache spoke several times during the debate and has been criticised for making political speeches and seeking to influence voting.

He has defended his interventions, saying that he was doing his duty as Attorney General to advise the States on legal and constitutional issues.
