Oil still washing up on beaches

The oil has been washing up on beaches mainly in the west of the Island for some weeks and has particularly affected surfing at St Ouen’s Bay.The Prestige tanker was carrying 70,000 tonnes of oil when it went down in the Bay of Biscay in November and has been leaking ever since.

An attempt to patch up the vessel is unlikely to begin any earlier than next year, and if the wind and current blow in Jersey’s direction there is nothing anyone can do to stop it hitting Jersey beaches.Public Services are continuing their beach clean-up operation with their regular summer beach-cleaning programme.

They have not had to employ contractors yet, but have been sending oil to the incinerator at Bellozanne.
