Health warning over oil on beaches

The pollution could be hazardous to health.

With oil from the sunken tanker Prestige still coming ashore on several Island beaches, swimmers and surfers should wear wetsuits as a precaution against the potentially cancer-causing oil, according to the head of Health Protection.Steve Smith has told Islanders not to try to clear up the oil which is being washed up on beaches, and that anyone who gets it in his or her mouth or eyes should go straight to hospital.

The oil has been found washed up on beaches at St Ouen’s Bay, Portelet, Beauport and Grève de Lecq.
