Jersey seeking revenge

The vastly-experienced Dave Gorman, a former Minor Counties player for Berkshire, returns as captain after missing last year’s defeat because of injury and he is eager to win back the silverware taken from Jersey’s grasp for the first time in 11 years.Gorman said: ‘It hurt seeing the team get beaten last year.

Several things didn’t go our way on the day and hopefully we’ll get a bit of luck here and there in Guernsey and that will benefit us this time.’The game will be tough but everyone is looking forward to it and if our application is good we’ll give ourselves a good chance of winning.’Guernsey will still be on a high after winning last year and they’ll be itching to do well again.

They will start favourites because of last year and we certainly won’t underestimate them.’Jersey, under manager Chris Searson, have selected 12 players for the Cherry Godfrey Challenge match and the team will not be named until shortly before the game.Gorman said: ‘We have a few options open to us but it’s mainly due to what happens with the weather and the wicket this week.

Last weekend I played on it for the over-40s and it was consistent throughout.’We have good strength all round.

The top order batsmen have all proved themselves in recent years while wicket keeper Simon Short is the best in the Channel Islands and I’m sure if he had lived in England he would be playing professionally now.’Bowlers Stuart Ramskill and Mark Saralis have both been consistent this season with Mark really exploding into form in the last month.

He is a very talented all-rounder and was unlucky not to have scored a century for Romerils last weekend.’When he bowls the ball hits the deck very hard from a good height and with his good attitude as well he is a potential match-winner.’Stuart is another very good all-rounder.

He proved his worth with the bat to steer St Ouen to the Evening League title play-off win last week and his leg-spin bowling is something Guernsey batsmen are not used to facing.’Guernsey could have at least three new faces in their team as uncapped players Matt Oliver, Matt Jeffery, Tim Duke and André van Rooyen are all in the squad.Duke, if he recovers from injury, and Oliver have both been in fine form with the bat this season and they look certainties to join an already strong batting line-up of skipper Andy Biggins, Glen Milnes, Ami Banerjee, Jeremy Frith and Stuart Le Prevost.Jersey (from): Gorman, Matt Hague, Steve and Tony Carlyon, Chris Jones, Meeku Patidar, Rob Tewkesbury, Simon Short, Stuart Ramskill, Mark Reynolds, Mark Saralis and Paul Horton.
