Mont Orgueil: Truce is called

Three years after the Jersey Heritage Trust’s proposals to spend £3 million of public money ignited a row that has attracted national attention, plans for more than 120 items of work have been approved in principle.

These include gardens, a new ticket office and a café.However, the trust’s case to restore the ruined spaces in the Inner Keep failed to convince Environment and UK archaeological experts and was rejected largely because it did not meet English Heritage guidelines. While the principle of reinstating floors and roofs in the Tudor Hall and reroofing the Long Passage were accepted in principle, Environment rejected the same in the D-shaped space – other than reroofing – and the installation of toilets and kitchen facilities. The last controversial item, an external staircase on the exterior of the apartment block, was refused as the committee thought it would have a detrimental impact on Jersey’s icon building. The trust accepted the outcome and said they would not be appealing.
