Another Jersey football club struggling with signings

St Martin FC, like St Lawrence, admit that if they do not get an influx of new players very soon they will be forced to withdraw their reserve teams from the flybe Combination League.St Martin secretary Peter Bracegirdle said: ‘We will definitely run one team but at the moment we do not have enough players to run two teams.

Rumours that the club is about to fold are not true but, yes, we are struggling to get two teams together.’I believe we are in a similar position to St Lawrence, we currently have 24 signings but that is not enough to field two teams for a full season.

Should we only run one team this season I personally fear what may be around the corner for St Martin.’We have tried to recruit as many former players as possible but many are just not interested.

It is certainly tough times on the playing side.’We will not start the season with a reserve team and then pack in after a couple of games.

That would be unfair on other teams and the league so I appeal to any footballers who want a regular game to get in touch with us.’St Lawrence announced ten days ago that they were struggling to sign players – they had only 19 for two teams.Secretary and team manager Ian Watts said: ‘There has been a slight improvement, we now have 21 signed with another eight forms out and hopefully they will be filled in this weekend.

Anyone else interested in playing for us would be very welcome.’Numbers have increased at training and those that have signed are what I believe to be generally interested in playing football and not those who will run off to the pub every time there’s a televised match on at Saturday lunch time.’St Lawrence will make their final decision about a reserve team next week.Contact numbers for the clubs are 736999 (Ian Watts) and 07797 758 225 (Peter Bracegirdle).
