Jersey’s competition regulator has issued the global telecoms giant a licence to compete directly with incumbent operators Jersey Telecom and Newtel Solutions – but full approval will be given only after a formal period of consultation. The company, which bought Guernsey Telecom last year for £23.8 million, has been given the go-ahead by the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority, which intends to issue Cable & Wireless with a Class 2 licence – for applicants without ‘significant market power’ – from 1 December. However, before then, there will be a statutory period for objections and comments to be heard.

A copy of the licence will be available for viewing at the JCRA’s office in Union House and formal responses will be heard by the JCRA board.
