Threat to Les Pas debate

If enough disgruntled politicians take part in a protest over access to legal advice on the long-running case, the Assembly will be left without a quorum and will be unable to go ahead. The decision to hold the debate entirely in camera – preventing the public from hearing any discussion – could also prompt Members to walk out.The prospect of the Chamber finding itself inquorate is already a concern for the States Greffier, Michael de la Haye.

He has written to all States Members asking for notice on who will have to declare an interest and leave the Chamber for the debate on 16 September. The problem lies with the fact that Ann Street Group Ltd, which is owned by CI Traders Ltd – one of the biggest companies in the Island – has shares in Les Pas Holdings Ltd.

This could mean that a large number of Members have a pecuniary interest in the debate and will not be able to take part in it.
