States: ‘Errors on increase’

That is the recommendation contained in the Audit Commission’s annual report for last year, which will be presented to the States tomorrow.

The report highlights areas of waste, slow progress and duplication among States departments, and the commission says that departments should be held accountable if they fail to meet targets for what they do with their money.’Departments should be publicly stating what they intend to achieve with the funds allocated to them on an annual basis as part of the budget process,’ says the report.’At the end of the year they should be held to account by publicly stating whether they achieved what they said they would.’Some States innovation, like the fundamental spending review process, is praised by the commission. It also says that the strategic plan, which is expected to be made public by Policy and Resources at the end of the year, will help co-ordinate services and prevent both duplication and waste.
