The babes from the woods

Born just one week ago in the woods at the Zoo, the babies – one male and one female – are being kept warm and are fed every two hours during the day and every four hours at night. The feeding is being carried out by deputy head of mammals Dominic Wormell and his team, who are taking it in turn to get up during the night.

Black lion tamarins come from Brazil and their native rainforest homes have been eroded until only pockets remain.

Schoolchildren in Jersey have been raising money to plant corridors of trees to join up these isolated pockets of rainforest so that the tamarins can move between them to breed.’It would be nice to think that one day, these babies might end up back in the rainforests of Brazil,’ said Mr Wormell.
