Keep our play area open, say children

Following Housing’s announcement yesterday that they plan to close play facilities in Pillar Gardens and Nicholson Close because of persistent vandalism, the young residents of Oaktree Gardens set up an impromptu meeting last night to see what they could do.St Helier No 2 district Deputy Jennifer Bridge attended and agreed to help them.’I was shocked to see that the play area was to be removed by Housing from the Pillar Gardens and Nicholson Close area,’ she said.’The children were understandably worried that someone could come in and vandalise their playground, but the innocent are being penalised here.

I appreciate the mounting costs to Housing, but I can’t help feeling that by giving in, we are allowing the vandals to win.

I feel very sorry for the children of the estate,’ she said.
