Lake pollution leaves swans homeless – again

The swans, who belong to Lakeside Residential Home in St Peter, were taken to the shelter on 15 June after oil pollution forced them from their home. They were cleaned and kept at there until Friday, when they were given a cautious go ahead from the Environment Department’s water pollution unit to return home. But three days later, the white swans are back at the shelter after turning black with oil yesterday morning.Lakeside proprietor Michelle Cousins said that everyone at the home was very disappointed.’We were in the process of naming them and everyone was so pleased to see them back,’ she said.

‘Someone said they saw a streak of oil across the lake on Sunday but we could not see anything, then today the swans were all black on their chests and bodies.’
