Walk-out protest over ‘snoopers charter’ plans

The meeting was to discuss the Draft Regulation of Investigatory Powers Law, but many of those who attended left after it became clear that no consideration had been given as to how the law would affect the finance industry and e-commerce in particular. The law was described as ‘virtually a copy’ of the UK Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act – labelled as the ‘snoopers charter’ by opposers.

This allows surveillance of internet activities without a judicial warrant, and requires the handover of encryption keys on demand.

The UK legislation has been derided by human rights and civil liberties groups, and questions have been raised over whether it is compatible with human rights and data protection laws.
