Figures ‘show price rigging’

Price rigging has been blamed for the difference and politicians want the Competition Law discussed as soon as possible. Both white and brown sliced bread is over 50 per cent more expensive, with milk and eggs being nearly 60 per cent.

All meats are 14 per cent more and fruit and vegetables are 13 per cent. Also, the luxury of cheaper fuel, cigarettes and alcohol is disappearing as prices in the Island are closing the gap on those in the UK.However, when the duty and imp?ts are removed from all items, cigarettes and petrol are about double the price in Jersey compared to the UK, solid fuels 64 per cent more expensive, with alcohol 21 per cent more. The Statistics Unit of the Policy and Resources Department have compiled a report which compares 59 items – like for like – with prices in the UK.Finance and Economics president Senator Terry Le Sueur said the results of the price comparison, which will now be released annually, proved that price fixing was happening.

‘When you look at the prices after tax it certainly looks like prices are being rigged,’ he said.’But these results prove there is definitely a lack of competition in Jersey and therefore we must debate the Competition Law as soon as possible.’The report, which has tables to show exact differences between items, is available to the public on the States website.
