And he is also calling on shareholders in CI Traders – who he says include the States of Jersey through the Greville Bathe Fund – to organise an emergency general meeting of the company to let the directors know what they think of the company’s involvement in the Les Pas claim.Mr Shenton is leading the opposition to the proposed deal and earlier this week hundreds of Islanders turned up to hear him speak on the issue.
There were so many people that Tuesday night’s meeting had to be held in the street outside the Town Hall.Mr Shenton says that now the States have got an idea of the strength of feeling they should be prepared to hold a referendum on the issue.’The people should make the decision.
Everyone would know what the options and consequences could be and would be able to vote taking into account the issues.
I cannot see any reason why the public should not make this decision over what is, after all, an asset owned by the people of Jersey,’ he said.He said that if the Policy and Resources Committee were to take that route, he would support the committee.
