Lieut-Governor’s power of veto to be removed

The veto – which can only be used in specific circumstances, and which has rarely been exercised – is to be removed following consultation between the Privileges and Procedures Committee, the Bailiff, the Attorney General, and the present Lieut-Governor, Air Chief Marshal Sir John Cheshire. At a Privileges Committee meeting on Friday, president Senator Christopher Lakeman said that Sir John had indicated that he had ‘no intention or desire to keep the veto’.When Privileges put their proposals for a rewritten States of Jersey Law to the Assembly, the power of veto will not be included. In a letter to the Lieut-Governor asking for his views on whether the veto should be maintained, Senator Lakeman wrote that he had been prompted by the Bailiff’s request that his own power of dissent should be removed.’It reflected, in my view, the actuality that the veto was extremely limited in power,’ said Senator Lakeman at yesterday’s meeting.
