Under the current system of renumeration, Deputies and Senators have to undergo a means test to determine how much they can be paid, up to a maximum of £38,238.

That figure combines the expense allowance all Members can claim, and the minimum income support figure of £28,609 – which is subject to a means test on their general financial situation.The Privileges and Procedures Committee agreed at their meeting on Friday22 to lodge a proposition to abolish means testing for debate in the autumn session.Full report in today’s JEP, on sale at 1.15 pm.
