Canadian film company Serendipity spent four days in the Island, shooting at La Rocque, St Brelade’s Church and Hamptonne, for a movie version of Somerset Maugham’s play Theatre, adapted by Ronald Harwood, the winner of best adapted screenplay at this year’s Academy awards for Roman Polanski’s The Pianist.The story was originally set partly in St Malo, but was changed to Jersey because the producers felt the Island had a lot of natural beauty to offer.
Annette Bening plays a successful actress who comes to Jersey to visit her mother and aunt.
Michael Gambon also filmed scenes in the Island.’It is set in 1938, so as you can imagine there were no bunkers, no TV aerials – it took a lot of work to cover them up,’ said Jersey-based location manager Isabella Kaliff-Lewis.
‘We had to empty Bouley Bay of all the boats.
We couldn’t have done it if everybody here hadn’t been so helpful.’
